Founded on February 14th, 2005 in San Mateo, California, YouTube quickly grew in popularity now being one of the most used and popular sites. It has tools enabling anyone to express themselves to the world which makes it even more efficient.
Topics on YouTube are endless; they range from gaming to music to art and anything in between. However, with all of that content available to users, it makes sense that viewers would want to watch it without having to be on their phone all the time.
Unfortunately, YouTube automatically shuts off if you lock your phone. As soon as your screen switches off, YouTube automatically pauses what you are watching, so you can’t just listen to videos while on the go. There’s no setting to solve this in the default YouTube app, as YouTube would rather we keep our eyes glued to their ad space, but there are still a couple of ways to play YouTube videos with the phone locked.
WAYS TO PLAY YOUTUBE WITH PHONE LOCKED
Maybe you want to do this to save battery, want to listen to music or an interview while you sleep. The ways to do this depends on your mobile operating system.
USE SAFARI BROWSER ON IOS
Use the Safari web-browser to pull up the desired video and play it from there. If you do so, the audio content should playback via your lock screen. Or you can use the Mozilla Firefox browser to accomplish the same feat where you can also control playback with this browser as well.
- Download and install on your iPhone.
- Go to the YouTube website within the browser.
- Tap the settings (three dots) button at the top right of the page and tick request desktop site.
- Tap on a video to play it, and it will continue to play even after you lock your phone.
USE MOZILLA FIREFOX ON ANDROID
If you’re using an Android device, pull up a YouTube video within the Mozilla Firefox browser instead of via the YouTube application. Mozilla’s Firefox application is a free download that you can take advantage of whenever you’d like. It’s a great, sleek, light browser that is bliss to use.
You can even lock your phone and the device will continue to play the audio anyways. You have to unlock it to skip through the video, pause it, play it, or do anything else as it does not provide a playback control.
USE GOOGLE CHROME BROWSER ON ANDROID
Simply pull up the Chrome Browser and watch the video in question. If you lock your phone, the audio should continue playing. You can control the pause and play features via your lock screen.
Ways to Ensure Google Chrome is in Desktop Mode on your Android device:
- Open your Google Chrome mobile browser.
- Head up to the three dots on the top right of the screen.
- Tap that and select “Request Desktop Site” from the resulting list of items.
- It will check a box, and the page will refresh into a larger, desktop-themed website.
However, if you have the browser in desktop mode, you won’t be able to control the playback features via the lock screen. The Google Chrome Browser on Android workaround is similar to the Mozilla Firefox one.
